Module Three - Tasks

HTML Tags Task:

This task requires us to work through a tutorial and create a web page. We are to note any difficulties that we encountered with these exercises. The whole tutorial consist of 14 lessons, and each lesson have a example helping student to compare their own works with the correct answer. I have experence on website-desgin. I have used some application softwares for desgin website, such as frontpage, dreamware and word. So edit a website is not strange to me, but this time is my first time to learn HTML, I feel very interesting and pretty enjoy to learn HTML. The HTML tutorial is simple and easy followed. Each time when I get problem, I will check the example solution and find the correct HTML tag, it is very helpful becasue when you writing a wrong HTML, you want to see exactly where I made a mistake, after compare with the correct HTML tag, I will remember that mistake and will not make the same mistake twice. Most lessons are easy followed, and I don't have too much problem, but I have encountered one problem and untill now I cann't find the solution.

Lesson 8d. Links to Sections of a Page, this lesson requires us to creat the named ahchor and link to a named anchor. The steps can be simplified as follows:

Follow the instructions I have finsihed practice and compared my answers with example solution, the problem is my web font change to italic, whatever the headings or the text. I have read this lesson again and re-write the HTML tags, but the problem is still here, I checked my HTML and it is the same as the tutorials' but why my font change to italic. Is there anyone know the answer please let me know, thank you!

Standard Task:
"The 5 most important ‘rules’ for writing online"

To complete this task, I read the Standard tutorial again and I also did lots of research, finally I have summarised the 5 most important rules for writing onlin, these are Simplicity Rules, Concise Text Rules, Scannability Rules, Scannability Rules, Objectivity Rules and Chunk Rules.

Simplicity Rules:
  • Use contrasting colors for page background and text. Dark text on a light background is easy to read.
  • Careful with backgroup patterns: they often obscure a site's content instead of complimenting it.
  • Avoid blinking or underlined text: Blinking text distracts and annoys visitors. The only underlined text on your document should be hyperlinks.
  • Spell check! Spelling errors make your site look unprofessional. Use a spell checker because it's often hard to find errors in your own copy.

Concise Text Rules:

  • Cut unnecessary words
  • Use a shorter word over a longer one
  • Cut unnecessary phrases or sentences

Scannability Rules:

  • The vast majority of users do not read text online word-by-word. Almost 80% scan it.

Objectivity Rules:

  • Avoid exaggeration or boasting
  • Don't make subjective claims or claims without evidence
  • Don't use buzzwords or jargon

Chunk Rules:

  • Split information into page-long hyperlinked chunks
  • Each page should focus on a single topic or theme
  • Background details can be provided on separate page(s)
  • Provide a table of contents/introduction page with links to content chunks

Email task








1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?




Today I will use yahoo email as my primary mail reader to show my answer. Some mail readers like Faxmail also can help you to manage your email, but is not always available and convenience. The most effective and efficient way to check email is by using Yahoo or hotmial which allows you to access your email on the web from any location, at any time. simply go to the website for your mail address and log in.

After log in my account, I read one of my past email , and I found most mail readers (email client ie: MS Outlook, Eudora, etc.) do not display the header because it contains information for computer to computer routing. The information that I usually get to see from a normal email header are:

  • The Subject of the email
  • The Date and Time
  • From - Sender
  • To - Receiptor
  • Message body

But when I click full headers button it is show like this:

From this it is not hard to find Subject, Date, From and IP address. But what is Received mean? after doing some research work, finally I found the answer:Every time an e-mail moves through a different mail server, a new Received header line is added to the beginning of the message headers list. It means that as you read the Received headers from top to bottom, you are moving closer to the computer or person that sent you the email. If the header shows more than one Received, there is the possibility that the sender have added one or more false Received header to fool and redirect the recipient to another location or to prevent them from finding the true sender.

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the "cc","bcc"and "reply all"functions of email?
  • "cc" is Carbon Copy.“cc” function can be used when you want to send a message to a group of people. Say your sending an email to 123@hotmail.com you put their address in the "To:" field, and if you want to send it to someone else you put their address in the cc field.
  • "bcc" is Blind Carbon Copy. if you want to send it to someone else and not want the orignal person your sending it to to see it then you can use bcc
  • "reply all" function can be used when you sending a reply message not only to an e-mail's original author, but also to any other recipients that were listed in the original To or Cc lists.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?

The best way to ensure that an attachment can be opened by the recipient is to make sure the correct format that the file you were attached and don't not over the upload limit. The popular file formats include: RTF,PDF, JPG,DOC etc.

4.What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

I have set up several rules on my email account. It will help me to manage information from different group of people, I have several folders which are used for different purpose-family, study, business, work and friend. I also use filter to stop junk email and that will proect me from virus attack.

5.How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

As mentioned above, I have set up several folders which are used for different purpose. The reason for doing that is help me to keep information separate and easy to find and management.

Lists Task

Pros and Cons

Disscussion Boards:

  • Disscussion Board can be classified by different topics.
  • Disscussion Board can not choose different way to view messages
  • Disscussion Board are easy read, it includes the original topic and its replies

Lists:

  • Lists have variety of choice to view messages
  • Can not be sepatated by different topics
  • Lists have all messages and replies jumbled up.

For the Lists, you can receive a particular kind of news or articles from a group you are interested in. Disscussion Boards, more suitable for learning purpose, like WebCT disscussion boards, it is provides a platform that allow students to communicate with each others.

Newsgroup Task

To finish this task, I need a newsgroup reader, so I find a software named Xnews from http://www.download.com/Xnews/3000-2164_4-10144167.html and after downloading I install it to my pc.
Next step to start newsgroup I need a Usenet server, so I get this free usenet server:

Chat Task

This task is very easy for me, I used ICQ some years ago, so I konw how to use it. First I downloaded the latest ICQ and re-install on my computer, and then I spent 30 mins talking with my added friends. I feel comfortable with ICQ, but if let me choose, I would choose MSN rather than ICQ, because MSN is more efficient and more popular than ICQ. All of my friends they use MSN, so am I

Telnet:

What I have learned about Telnet.

Telnet is a user command and an underlying TCP/IP protocol for accessing remote computers. Through Telnet, an administrator or another user can access someone else's computer remotely. On the Web, HTTP and FTP protocols allow you to request specific files from remote computers, but not to actually be logged on as a user of that computer. With Telnet, you log on as a regular user with whatever privileges you may have been granted to the specific application and data on that computer.
A Telnet command request looks like this (the computer name is made-up):
telnet://library.deakin.edu.au

Practice

1. typing telnet:// in the URL box of my browser

2 typing telnet://library.deakin.edu.au and select the current terminal:
  • Windows Telnet (for Windows - free): V>VT100
  • NCSA Telnet (for Macs - free): W>NCSA VT100

3.Ok so far so good, now we can search book by using deakin universtiy library system. This system is similar content to the Curtin Library’s website which I'm quite familiar with, cause I'm current student in curtin university. There are several search categories that have been listed alphabetically, to continue this practice I choose "A"(for author) and inputted “Bennahum” as the author of the book.

4.There are two authors on the screen, both of them are named “Bennahum”. I print this page and inputted my hotmail address.

5.Finally I received a email form "DEAKIN UNI LIB"

FTP:

What I have learned about FTP.

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, FTP is used to transfer files between computers on a network, such as the internet You can use FTP to exchange files between computer accounts, to transfer files between an account and a desktop computer, or to access software archives on the Internet.

Practice

First download FTP client.

Next step I install it to my PC and after that I put “recall.curtin.sdu.au” in the ftp address box and “anonymous” as the username. Then the following shows up:

Finally I found the "readme.txt" and get the answer "CAPITALIZATION" .

What I have learned about Internet tool.

  • Hop In a packet-switching network, a hop is the trip a date packet takes from one router or intermediate point to another in the network. On the Internet the number of hops a packet has taken toward its destination (called the "hop count") is kept in the packet header. A packet with an exceedingly large hop count is discarded.
  • Traceroute is a utility that records the route through the Internet between your computer and a specified destination computer. It also calculates and displays the amount of time each hop took.
  • Ping is a basic internet program that allows a user to verify that a particular IP address exists and can accept requests. The verb ping means the act of using the ping utility or command. Ping is used diagnostically to ensure that a host computer you are trying to reach is actually operating. If, for example, a user can't ping a host, then the user will be unable to use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to send files to that host.

Practice

1.Traceroute from the chosen site to curtin.edu.au

From this output,

  • We can see IP number of the hostname curtin.edu.au is "134.7.134.47" .
  • We can see that our packets took 20 network player hops to reach their destination
  • We can also see the times the first, second, and third test packets took to cross each of the network hops.
